Head Coach Cliff Clinkscales: A True Leader of the Game

From the streets of Jamaica, Queens, to leading the KW Titans, Coach Cliff Clinkscales’ basketball journey is a story of dedication, resilience, and leadership.

Growing up in New York City, Cliff discovered basketball at a young age and quickly stood out for his work ethic and natural ability to lead. His path wasn’t always easy, but he overcame academic challenges early on and used them as motivation to grow both on and off the court. That determination carried him through high school, college at DePaul University, and into a professional career that spanned more than a decade.

As a player, Cliff built his reputation as one of the most dependable point guards in the National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada). During his time with the Halifax Rainmen and Hurricanes, he became the league’s all-time assist leader with 1,660 total assists, significantly more than any other player in league history. He also ranks fourth all-time in games played (224) and fourth in steals (279), highlighting his durability and defensive impact. In the 2019-20 season, Clinkscales averaged 10.1 assists per game, one of the best single-season marks in league history, further reflecting his selfless style of play and commitment to making his teammates better. Known not just for his skill, but for his ability to control the game, inspire confidence, and lead by example, he earned the nickname “The General”.

After retiring in 2020, Cliff seamlessly transitioned into coaching, bringing the same passion and basketball IQ to the Titans. Since becoming head coach of the KW Titans in the 2021-22 season, he has focused on building a culture rooted in discipline, teamwork, and accountability. His players consistently credit him for helping them grow both as athletes and as people.

“On the court, consistency and accountability are important,” said Coach Cliff. “It’s a long season, and we’re just trying to keep the main thing the main thing, and that’s basketball.”

Beyond basketball, Coach Cliff is deeply committed to giving back. He has worked with youth programs and community initiatives, using his platform to encourage young people to succeed in the classroom and in life, not just in sports.

“We’ve got a really good group of guys. They all come from different backgrounds, but they mean well and carry themselves the right way. We always get good feedback in the community. People tell us our guys are respectful and handle themselves properly. That means a lot.”
