Coach Cavell Johnson: Once a Titan, Always a Titan

From the gyms of Maryland to the courts in Kitchener-Waterloo, Coach Cavell Johnson’s basketball journey is built on discipline, toughness, and leadership.

Raised in Fort Washington and Temple Hills, Maryland, Johnson discovered basketball early, earning attention for his athleticism and competitive drive. He played NCAA Division I basketball at James Madison University before transferring to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he continued to develop as a versatile and dependable forward.

Johnson’s professional career took him across North America and overseas. He won an ACPBL championship and Finals MVP with the Beltway Bombers before joining NBL Canada, where he became one of the league’s top defenders. During his time with the Saint John Mill Rats and Brampton A’s, he earned multiple All-League selections, won Defensive Player of the Year, and was named an NBL Canada All-Star in 2014. That same season, he captured the Slam Dunk Contest title, becoming a fan favourite.

Known for his physical presence and defensive instincts, Johnson also gained international experience in Finland and Greece before returning to Canada with the KW Titans. In 2018, he transitioned into coaching and served as the Titans’ head coach through the 2020–21 season, bringing accountability, energy, and player-focused leadership to the program.

Today, Johnson continues to shape the game as head coach of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s basketball team while gaining international coaching experience in the Basketball Africa League. His journey as a player and coach reflects the values that define Titans basketball.
