From NCAA to the BSL: James Towns’ Rise with the KW Titans

Professional basketball journeys don’t always follow a straight line, and for KW Titans point guard James Towns, the Basketball Super League represents the next proving ground in a career built on speed, skill, and competitive edge.

A Detroit native and Niagara University graduate, Towns arrived in Kitchener-Waterloo with a strong Division I foundation and a game built for the professional level. Standing 5’9”, he makes his presence felt through a lightning-quick first step, high basketball IQ, and the ability to control tempo as a true floor general.

Whether creating his own scoring opportunities or setting up teammates, Towns brings poise and purpose every time he steps onto the floor.

Known for his playmaking, perimeter shooting, and on-ball defense, Towns thrives in high-pressure moments. His decision-making and leadership have made him a key engine of the Titans’ offense and a consistent momentum-shifter on both ends of the court.

That impact has already translated into results this season. Towns has earned two Player of the Game honours, including a standout performance against the Montreal Toundra with 23 points, four rebounds, and four assists. He followed that up with a dominant showing against the Lake Erie Jackals, recording 26 points, three rebounds, and seven assists.

While the path from the NCAA to the NBA is increasingly competitive, leagues like the BSL provide players with valuable opportunities to continue developing, sharpen their skills, and stay within reach of the sport’s highest level. For Towns, that opportunity is matched with commitment.

“I love this team, I love the support, and I’m excited to be here in KW,” said Towns.

That balance, confidence without complacency, defines both his approach and his presence. Off the court, Towns keeps things simple, unwinding with music and studying game film. On it, he delivers speed, control, and swagger that reflect the high level of basketball being played in Kitchener-Waterloo.

As the Titans continue their Basketball Super League campaign, Towns’ journey highlights how professional players use the BSL as a platform to compete, grow, and stay one step closer to the next level.
